The Good Hotel Guide 2009 says about us :
'Thoroughly recommended' this year, David and Diane
Skelton's creeper-covered replica Georgian home stands in farming country
between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. 'Delightful stay; splendid hosts, very
good food.' There are open peat fires, an oak staircase, and books and magazines
in the sitting room where tea with home-baked cake is taken. 'Pleasing little
touches in our well-equipped and comfortable bedroom.' A room with a four-poster
bed had 'good white linen; the huge bath was deep and double-ended, and there
was a pile of lovely thick towels'. 'We make all our own bread and rolls from
granary to walnut bread,' says Mrs Skelton, who posts her four-course table
d'hôte menu on a blackboard, discussing likes and dislikes in advance.
She cooks French/Irish dishes using local free-range and organic produce ('simple,
not haute cuisine', she says), perhaps slow-cooked duckling on a bed of greens
with mango and Madeira sauce. The wine list is entirely French. The Skeltons
sometimes join guests for after-dinner drinks. Breakfast has a 'brilliant
buffet spread', a choice of six cooked dishes, home-made bread, jams and marmalades;
eggs come from the hens which roam the grounds. Good fishing nearby. (John
Clark, and others)
Georgina
Cambell's Ireland - The Guide 2009 says about us :
" Diane and David Skeltons hospitable country house is in a pleasant rural area of gentle farming countryside just a few minutes drive east of Cong and Ashford Castle.
Large and well-proportioned, it has a welcoming feeling from the minute you arrive through the door into the classic back and white tiled hall.
Public rooms are furnished stylishly and include a spacious drawing room with a cosy open fire, and the lovely Garden Room dining room, where dinner is available to guests by arrangement - like a dinner party, its a wholesome 5-course meal based on seasonal local ingredients, organic where possible, and all bread and rolls are home-made; a short but surprising wine list includes a choice of five bubblies.
An oak staircase leads up to the three charming bedrooms, all with luxurious, well-finished bathrooms.
This would make a very comfortable base for a few days spent in the area; the only slight downside is that the road is rather close, although it is not busy at night."
Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay Ireland says
about us :
"Crunch up the driveway to Ballywarren House no ancient pile but a handsome new build. Inside is a rich décor and lovely hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. English David and Diane decided to follow three (of five) daughters to Ireland, built their house as they like it and have poured energy and passion into the whole gorgeous place. Sash windows and plaster mouldings, fireplaces and staircases have been worked by craftsmen in the Georgian style, then embellished with bright curtains and decorative hangings, gilt mirrors and fresh flowers. The sitting room, sheathed in green with a polished wood floor, has deep sofas, a real fire and glossy magazines a heady mix; in the pink and sage dining room you can be as intimate or as convivial as you wish. Each bedroom is different, each a treat: big beds, bold colours, snowy linen, cut-glass decanters, Crabtree & Evelyn by the baths. At the back are views to pastures where sheep munch. There's music and art in the family, cooking is a passion and they make all their own bread, biscuits, puddings and jams. There's even a ghillie if you like to fish."
